Chatbot

Chatbot activities offer a unique opportunity for students to engage in text-based conversations with an AI-powered bot. This interactive approach can significantly enhance language learning by fostering fluency, building confidence, and providing immediate feedback.

Quantity of Interaction

In chatbot activities, the quantity of interaction is measured by the number of student responses, excluding initial greetings.

Study Subject, Theme, and Special Instructions

Chatbot activities are particularly well-suited for vocabulary acquisition, fluency development, and confidence building. While they may not be ideal for beginners or standardized test preparation, they excel in preparing learners for real-world scenarios like job interviews, academic discussions, and everyday conversations.

To maximize the effectiveness of chatbot activities, it's crucial to carefully consider the following components:

  • Study Subject: This defines the specific language focus, such as "Restaurant work vocabulary."
  • Theme: This sets the context for the conversation, such as "Restaurant job interview."
  • Special Instructions: These provide detailed guidelines for the bot's behavior, such as impersonating a recruiter and asking relevant questions.

For example, to prepare a student for a restaurant job interview, you could set the study subject to "Restaurant work vocabulary," the theme to "Restaurant job interview," and the special instructions to have the bot impersonate a recruiter and ask questions about past experience, reasons for applying, and strengths.

Remember to keep the theme and study subject concise, and use the special instructions to tailor the activity to the student's specific needs.

Instant Feedback and Feedback Level

As a teacher, you can choose whether the bot should provide immediate feedback or delay it for later analysis. If you opt for immediate feedback, you can select one of two feedback levels:

  • Only grammar and spelling: This level highlights errors in the student's written expression.
  • Grammar, spelling, and study subject: This level not only checks for grammatical and spelling errors but also suggests alternative phrasings or vocabulary choices related to the study subject.

Minimum Response Length

For chatbot activities, you can define a Minimum response length to ensure students provide thoughtful and detailed answers. This setting requires students to write responses that exceed a specific number of characters, encouraging deeper engagement and critical thinking.

Text of Study

When incorporating a text of study into a chatbot activity, ensure consistency between the text, theme, and special instructions. For instance, adding a restaurant menu to the job interview scenario can enhance the authenticity of the conversation. However, including unrelated texts, such as the life of a musician, may disrupt the learning experience.
