Crafting Effective Special Instructions

The "Special Instructions for AI" field is a powerful tool that allows you to fine-tune the AI's behavior and tailor the activity to your students' specific needs. By providing clear and concise instructions, you can enhance the learning experience and maximize the effectiveness of your activities.

Here are some tips to help you master the art of writing effective prompts.

Be Specific and Clear

  • Define the Role: Clearly outline the role the AI should adopt (e.g., "Impersonate a friendly travel agent," "Act as a strict professor," or "Be a supportive language partner").
  • Specify the Topics: List the specific topics or themes you want the AI to cover (e.g., "Discuss climate change," "Explain the passive voice," or "Practice job interview questions").
  • Set the Tone and Style: Indicate the desired tone and style of the conversation (e.g., "Formal and academic," "Casual and conversational," or "Humorous and engaging").

Example:

Prompt: "Impersonate a strict professor and quiz the student on past tense irregular verbs. The AI should provide immediate feedback and corrections."

Provide Context and Background

  • Set the Scene: Create a realistic scenario or context for the activity (e.g., "Imagine you're at a restaurant ordering food," "You're in a job interview," or "You're discussing a book with a friend").
  • Provide Relevant Information: Share any relevant information that the AI should incorporate into the conversation (e.g., "The student is studying business English," "The student is interested in technology," or "The student is preparing for a presentation").

Example:

Prompt: "The student is preparing for a presentation on sustainable energy. The AI should ask questions to guide the student's thinking and provide feedback on their responses."

Challenge the Student

Encourage Critical Thinking: Ask the AI to pose thought-provoking questions or present complex scenarios to stimulate the student's cognitive abilities.

Example:

Prompt: "The AI should challenge the student to debate the pros and cons of a controversial topic, such as artificial intelligence or climate change."

Experiment and Iterate

  • Test and Refine: Try different prompts and observe the AI's responses.
  • Iterate and Improve: Adjust your prompts based on the results to achieve the desired learning outcomes.

By following these guidelines and experimenting with different prompts, you can create engaging and effective AI-powered activities that cater to your students' unique needs and learning styles.
