Quickstart

This quick guide will take you step-by-step through creating your first activity using Yapaling’s AI-powered tools, so you can start delivering personalized and engaging learning experiences for your students.

Let's create an activity for John Doe, who is studying the differente between "how many" and "how much". It will be a chat  in the context of buying stuff at the supermarket.

Log In and Access the Dashboard

To luse the platform, you need to log in to Yapaling with the credentials of your teacher account. On the main dashboard, you'll see options for managing students and activities.

Important

For you to log in, you will need a Yapaling username and password. If you still don't have it, we are in our Early Adopters Program (EAP), so you can fill out this form and we will contact you with credentials and further help.

Tip: If this is your first time logging in, take a moment to explore the dashboard and familiarize yourself with its main functions.

Creating a Student

To create your first activity, it’s important to first have a student to assign it to. So, before creating your activity, let’s add John Doe  as a student. If you already have a student created, skip to the next step.

In your main dashboard, you’ll see a list displaying all your students. If you don’t have any students yet, the list will be empty. Let’s create one.

  1. Click the “New Student” button. This will take you to the student details form.
  2. Complete the student information fields, such as name, country, language they will study, and their email address, Telegram username, or WhatsApp number (only one of these is required). At the end, there’s a section for notes about the student, visible only to you on the student’s profile page.
  3. Click “Save” to create the student, which will take you to their profile page.

Create a New Activity

Now that you have created your first student, you are ready to create your first activity. You will access John Doe student profile to assign a new activity. Lets give John Doe an activity

  1. On the student’s profile page, you will find a “Create New Activity” link.
  2. Click on that link, and it will take you to the “New Activity Form.”

Completing the New Activity Form

Within this form, you’ll find all the required fields to create a tailored activity for your student. Each field is important and will help you design a more detailed exercise that meets your student’s needs.

  • Language Activity: This field allows you to choose the language of the activity. Currently, Yapaling supports English, Italian, and Spanish. I the case of John Doe, we will choose English.
  • Student Level: In this field, you can specify your student’s language level (e.g., B1 in English). This is crucial so Yapaling can adjust the difficulty level of the activity accordingly.
  • Subject of Study: This field relates to the purpose of the activity. Are you helping your student perfect the use of prepositions in English? Or conditionals? This is an important field, as it defines the core focus of the activity. I this case as we said, John is trying to manage the use of How Much and How Many.
  • Activity Theme (Semantic Content): This will set a theme for the activity, such as creating a multiple-choice exercise that focuses on the use of prepositions while talking about a summer vacation in Hawaii. Lets use the context of grocery shopping.
  • Personal Message: This field allows you to send a personalized message to your student. The message will appear as a paragraph at the top of the activity, providing instructions or suggestions on how to approach the activity. Like this:
"Dear John, here is the activity for this week, as we were practicing on class the use of how much and how many, you will have to apply it on this conversation as you buy some groceries at the supermarket. Good Luck!"
  • Mode: You can choose between Practice or Evaluation mode. Both modes are different and will affect the feedback provided. As John is practicing, we should choose practice Mode.
  • Permitted Attempts: You can allow your student up to a maximum of ten attempts to complete the activity, or leave it without limits.
  • Type of Activity: These are the different types of activities that Yapaling can create:
    • Chat Conversation: A fluent conversation with Andy, our bot, to help your student practice through an emulated conversation.
    • Multiple Choice: Andy will present the classic multiple-choice activity where the student selects from a range of options.
    • Fill in the Blanks: Andy will create sentences with missing words, and the student must fill in the blanks. In this case, John will practice with a chat conversation.
  • AI Instructions: This is a very important field. It serves as a prompt for the AI. You should be specific about your goals for the activity, or any aspects you want the AI to pay special attention to. This information will not be visible to the student.
  • Instant Feedback: If activated, this button will provide the student with real-time feedback as they work on the activity. The AI will offer feedback or corrections immediately.
  • Use Text: If you activate this button, a text field will appear where you can paste text to be used as the work material for the activity. This could be a journalistic article or a technical text related to the student's activity.

Once you’ve finished filling out all the fields, click "Save" and the activity will be created. The site will then take you to the View Activity page.

Review and test the generated Activity

Yapaling will generate questions, exercises, or a conversation for the activity. Review the content and make any necessary adjustments to better suit your students' needs.

Going back to Students's profile, you'll be able to use the "Test Console" function, so you can access the same chat experience the student will have - As this option is for testing, the results will not be saved. Results are only save when they are done using the student's console link.

Advanced Tip: You can edit responses or add additional instructions to provide more specific feedback to customize the activity to tailor the student experience.

Send the Activity to Your Student

Once you’re satisfied with the activity, send instructions via email to your students so they can complete the activity on their preferred platforms (web, WhatsApp, Telegram). You can do so by clicking on the "Send Bot Instructions" button. It will send the instructions to email stated in Student's profile page.

Track Student Progress

Description: After your students complete the activity, go to the activity section to view individual performance. Use AI-powered feedback to identify areas for improvement and celebrate achievements.
